Thanks to Harvey Brandt for the results.
Sorry it has taken my so long to get out my report. Been having a
hard time making those frost bitten fingers work again. And at my
advanced age, I am still trying to recall whether it really was every
other throw that went out of the court because of the wind or if it
was only every third throw. At least the ones I threw.
If you missed it, you missed a great one. 30 teams showed up for the
VA States DDC event. Mostly because this year DDC was part of the
overall scoring for the first time. Here's hoping that it continues
to be part of the overall. It certainly draws the crowd eager for
points. Given that there were only 30 overall points available, the
first 15 teams were the only ones receiving.
Pools shaped up like this, with the team name first, original pool
seed next, then actual pool finish with pool record:
Pool A
Harvey Brandt / Mark Horn 1 1 6-0
Rick Sader / Dan Yarnell 5 2 4-2
Richard Paschal / Drew Preiss 3 3 4-2
John Elsner / Andy Lemann 2 4 3-3
Lori Daniels / Jenn Griffin 6 5 2-4
Bryan Steffen / Ronnie Turner 4 6 2-4
Lincoln Morgan / John Bradway 7 7 0-6
Some upsets here and tie breakers needed. Sader / Yarnell cam out of
freestyle life to seed bust and win the head to head tie break.
Pool B
Dave Hesselberth / Carlton Howard 1 1 6-0
Donny Wallace / Jack Stanton 2 2 4-2
Chris DePaola / Mark Ide 5 3 3-3
Tom Coffin / Jim Gaarder 6 4 3-3
Eric Olsen / Eric Wooten 3 5 3-3
Phil Cappa / Dale Crawford 4 6 3-3
Kevin Ide / Eric Erf 7 7 0-6
Major upsets and tie breaks. Olsen / Wooten lost a close game that
would have put them into second place in the pool.
Pool C
Stu Hubbs / Jeff Woessner 2 1 7-0
Jon Cohn / Scott Zimmerman 1 2 6-1
Jack Cooksey / Wayne Biever 3 3 5-2
Joey Cohn / Tim Cohn 4 4 3-4
Dave Griffin / Jan Soerensen 5 5 3-4
Merrill Detweiler / Dave Starry 7 6 2-5
Tony Ellis / Mike Moser 6 7 2-5
Ryan Olsen / Dave Steger 8 8 1-6
Almost the most regular of the initial pools.
Pool D
Randy Lahm / Dave Taylor 1 1 7-0
Randy Aiu / Dan Berman 3 2 6-1
Rob Knapik / Bill Wright 2 3 5-2
Dave Bolyard / Brad Wendt 4 4 4-3
Bob Cooksey / Rick Swyers 5 5 3-4
Terry Frank / Kristine Spekkens 6 6 2-5
Glenn Todd / Leo Rohr 7 7 1-6
Yeltri / Mike Trapasso 8 8 0-7
The most regular of the pools
Top two teams from the pools went to the A Semi, second two teams
went to the B Semi and because there were no overall points to be
gotten most of the rest of the teams opted to not play in the C semi
and practice for their golf in the overall. The three (3!!!!!)
Women's teams got together and played an all Women's round.
Women's results:
1- Lori Daniels / Jenn Griffin (who became the 6 time Women's Overall
winner)
2- Terry Frank / Kristine Spekkens (who also won MTA!!)
3- Susie Horn / Bethany Sanchez
Open Semis:
B Semi, coming out of nowhere, DePaola and Ide seed busted the B semi
field to take 9th place in DDC, here are the full results, final
place, team name, and record:
9- Chris DePaola / Mark Ide 7-0
10- Jack Cooksey / Wayne Biever 6-1
11- Joey Cohn / Tim Cohn 4-3 (won head to head 15-13)
12- Richard Paschal / Jeff Woessner 4-3
13- John Elsner / Andy Lemann 3-4 (won head to head 15-11)
14- Rob Knapik / Bill Wright 3-4
15- Dave Bolyard / Brad Wendt 2-5
16-Tom Coffin / Jim Gaarder 0-7
A Semi, plenty of very tight games and exciting action to determine
the top two teams for the finals. Heavy wind made getting it in the
court the primary task.
1- Brandt / Horn 6-0 (did not play last pool game due to time
considerations)
1- Hesselberth / Howard 6-0
3- Jon Cohn / Scott Zimmerman 5-2 (yes, THAT Scott Zimmerman)
4- Randy Lahm / Dave Taylor 4-3
5- Randy Aiu / Dan Berman 2-5 (won head to head 15-8)
6- Stu Hubbs / Jeff Woessner 2-5
7- Rick Sader / Dan Yarnell 1-6 (won head to head, 16-13)
8- Don Wallace / Jack Stanton 1-6
So on to the finals, in gusty conditions, but pleasant temperatures.
Brandt / Horn held a thin lead all the way to the end of the first
game to take it 15-11. The second game saw Hesselberth / Howard do
nothing wrong and trash them 15-7. The final game saw both teams stay
tight to the end with Brandt / Horn taking the last few points in a
row to win 15-11.
Again, some tough conditions but lots of teams and a wonderful event.
Dave Taylor once again put out a great field, 14 courts worth of
action.
Randy Lahm had VA DDC discs made for the event that were great
looking and played great as well. Thanks to everyone for showing,
let's do it again next year. Friday, April 13th, 2007
